Dr.Suchatvee Suwansawat, Chairman of World Tunnel Congress 2012 and Chairman of Thailand Underground & Tunnelling Group(TUTG), the Engineering Institute of Thailand Under H.M. The King’s Patronage (EIT) joined hands with Right Tunnelling Co.,Ltd. by Mr.Chavalit Thanomtin, Managing Director in supporting of the World Tunnel Congress 2012 (WTC), which Thailand will host at the first time on 18-25 May 2012 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. This is the great international conference of breakthrough engineering technology, top -knot underground construction industry and sustainable infrastructure to beneficial to the Thai and ASEAN people‘s quality of life, economic sustainability and safety attended by more than 60 countries from around the World.
TUTG has been playing active role in ITA. One of TUTG’s key achievements is selected to host World Tunnel Congress 2012 and 38th General Assembly in Bangkok (WTC2012). WTC2012 will be held on 18-23 May 2012 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center under the theme of Tunnelling and Underground Space For A Global Society.
It is the right time to hold the World Tunnel Congress in Bangkok in 2012 as Thailand is in the stage of developing several infrastructure projects for which tunnelling and underground space utilization are of vital importance. In addition to the extension of Mass Rapid Transit Projects being commenced, various major underground construction works such as water supply and other development projects are planning to implement.
TUTG is a Member Nation of International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association(ITA-AITES) which is an international technical-based organization having special consultative status with United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN-ECOSOC) since 1987. ITA is also a partner of United Nations International Strategic Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR). Founded in 1974 by nineteen nations, ITA now consists of 64 Member Nations and 310 Corporate or Individual Affiliate Members. The key missions of ITA are to encourage the use of the subsurface for the benefit of public, environment and sustainable development and to promote advances in planning, design, construction, maintenance and safety of tunnels and underground space. ITA members in the Southeast Asia are Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. In the near future it is likely that Myanmar will join its membership.
